Why LEDs
LEDs represent a far more efficient form of lighting then conventional HQI or fluorescent lamps. They consume far less energy than traditional light sources while producing a similar amount of light and have a secondary advantage of producing less heat, again bringing energy savings through a reduction in the need for cooling. This brings benefits for both your pocket and for the environment.
What are LEDs
LED, is an abbreviation of light-emitting diode. A LED is a semiconductor diode that emits narrow-spectrum light when electrically stimulated and is a form of electro luminescence.
A LED is a small area light source that has extra optics added to the chip to shape its radiation pattern. The colour of the emitted light depends on the chemical composition of the semi-conducting material used.
What are the energy savings
Compared to a single 250w HQI or twin 150w HQI you can expect to see energy savings in the region of 75% on lighting costs alone.
If you've been using a chiller or other form of cooling on your reef tank then expect to see even greater savings.
What if it goes wrong.
In the unlikely event of a problem with your light Green Skies will immediately replace the unit while it is under warranty.
What is the warranty
The AQUALED light comes with a 24 month warranty as standard.
What if it goes wrong after the warranty has expired
Owing to the Green Skies philosophy of modular design, any problem post-warranty can be easily resolved by sending the unit back to be serviced
Can I control the light
Unlike conventional lighting LEDs can be fully controlled with dimming being possible all the way down to 1% or less of maximum light output.
How do I control the light
An add on control module will shortly be available to enable you to control your AQUALED light.
What functions are controllable
Initially, on and off, dusk - dawn effect, random cloud cover, and lunar cycle will be controllable.
How long will my light last
The LEDs used in the Green Skies range of lights, when lit 12 hours a day, are rated to last for 11.7 years before the light produced reduces to 70% of the original output.
Note: It's good practice to replace reef aquarium lighting when the output has dropped to 70% of original output. HQI lamps normally reach this point and need to be replaced in under a years usage!
What servicing does it need
Unlike the more familiar gas discharge lighting typified by fluorescent tubes and HQI lamps, LED lighting needs no lamp replacement or servicing. Just occasionally wipe the light's cover glass with a damp cloth to remove any salt splashes. And of course with the low heat output of LED technology, unlike HQI lamps, you can do this while the light is on with no fear of a broken cover glass!
Is LED lighting OK for corals?
LED lighting is great for corals. Corals, and other photosynthetic animals, require lighting of sufficient intensity and of the correct spectrum to enable them to photosynthesise successfully. These requirements are easily met with high-output LED lighting.
Do you get "Glitter Lines" with LED lighting?
Yes, glitter lines are the product of light that is a point source such as the sun or a LED.
Can I use my AQUALED light on a freshwater planted tank?
Yes, you can use the current AQUALED light on a freshwater planted tank and have good results even though the light is optimised for reef aquaria.
During 2008 a true freshwater light will be available, optimised for freshwater planted aquaria.
Can I change a LED / LED colour
The AQUALED light is not customer serviceable but owing to its internal modular design it's possible to have the light upgraded or have the light spectrum changed by returning it to the factory.
How is the AQUALED light mounted
Currently the AQUALED light comes complete with cables for suspended mounting. In the new year Green Skies will be introducing a mounting that will allow the light to sit directly on the aquarium.
How much does it weigh
The AQUALED light weighs around 25 kg per metre
What sizes does it come in
The current range consisists of 2 off the shelf sizes that should be suitable for aquaria up to about 150cms long. Sizes larger than this will be catered for as bespoke units.
What colours can I have
Standard colours are black or silver. Other colours are available to special order.
Can I safely recycle my AQUALED light in the future
Yes! Unlike gas discharge lamps, which are classified as hazardous waste, LEDs contain negligible amounts of heavy metals requiring special recycling treatment.
